Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
