Pick of the Week
This Satirical Thriller
Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty and the feared consequences of ageing. Demi Moore offers an inspired performance as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star reduced to presenting a fitness program on TV. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a mysterious and gruesome process known as this experimental method. This generates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities in this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. As a family including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The daughter appears sensing the supernatural presence, and the entity appears defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that may be unexpected. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage fully commits to his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He acts as an egotistical celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to visit a festive event in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the intelligence agency to investigate the suspected cartel boss, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has left the local kids frightened. When Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about monetising the people's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, overdone appearance and bad faith, yet the lead actress achieves to present the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4
This Espionage Thriller
This week's another release from the filmmaker presents a espionage tale as tight as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's UK spy. The two stars are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Additional actors join in the smart espionage amusement.
