Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
